Description

Embroidery is the art of decorating fabric with stitched thread, a practice that spans thousands of years and nearly every culture. It combines technique, symbolism, and craftsmanship. Common foundational stitches include the chain stitch, satin stitch, running stitch, buttonhole stitch, and cross-stitch.

These categories help explain why different traditions look and feel so distinct:

  • Free / Surface Embroidery — Designs are stitched freely without following the fabric weave. This includes crewelwork, Chinese silk embroidery, and Japanese techniques.
  • Counted-Thread Embroidery — Stitches follow the grid of the fabric. Examples: cross-stitch, blackwork, Hardanger.
  • Canvas Work / Needlepoint — Dense stitching that covers the entire ground, such as bargello and Berlin wool work.
  • Drawn Thread & Cutwork (Whitework) — Threads are removed or cut to create lace-like patterns. Hardanger is a geometric counted form of this.
