Description

Afghan kilims are one of the most distinctive textile traditions in Central Asia—flat‑woven, geometric, deeply symbolic, and made with extraordinary skill.

What an Afghan Kilim Is
• A flatweave rug (no pile), typically under 5 mm thick.
• Woven with 100% wool and often organic or natural dyes.
• Made by village artisans, especially in northern Afghanistan—Mazar‑e‑Sharif, Andkhoy, Aqcha, Kunduz.
• Known for reversible construction, crisp geometry, and bold colour contrasts.
• Designs range from tribal motifs (diamonds, hooked medallions, amulets) to more modern palettes.

Maymana Kilims
• The style most people picture when they think “Afghan kilim.”
• Strong, serrated diamond motifs, often in orange, turquoise, charcoal, red, and green.
• Very durable and tightly woven.
• Widely available in the UK through fair‑trade importers.
Flatweave Kilims (General Afghan)
• One‑off designs, often with more muted or earthy palettes.
• Produced with traditional weaving techniques and organic dyes.
• Often sold as unique, single pieces rather than repeatable patterns.

Multicolour Natural‑Dye Kilims
• Dyed with pigments from fruits, vegetables, and spices.
• Often brighter, with a more contemporary feel.
• Typically woven in northern Afghanistan using Ghazni wool.
