American Quilt with World flags, early 20th Century, these were collected from tobacco boxes and stitched together, with attractive hand crafted woollen fringe.
Amazing to see how some Countries flag designs have changed – a snap shot of geopolitics before WW1 as many flags shown were replaced or abolished after
1918.

Description

What a Tobacco Flag Quilt Is

  • Origin: Between the 1890s and 1920s, American tobacco companies (notably American Tobacco Company, Sub Rosa, Turkey Red, Old Glory, Nebraska, Sweet Caporal) inserted small printed flannel flags into cigarette and tobacco packets as collectible giveaways.
  • Materials: The flags were usually printed on flannel, sometimes cotton, and featured:
    • National flags
    • State flags
    • Military insignia
    • Naval pennants
    • College banners
    • Occasionally advertising motifs
      • Use in Quilts: Collectors stitched these premiums into quilts, often:
        • Arranged in grids
        • Framed with sashing
        • Combined with embroidery
        • Mixed with other tobacco textiles (silks, felts, cigar ribbons)

      These quilts are now considered folk Americana, advertising ephemera, and textile curiosities.
